We Offer ViziLite Plus

We now offer ViziLite Plus which is an early detection oral cancer screening. It’s simple and quick and can be done in our office. It takes 5-10 minutes to perform and is painless. the patient rinses with a special solution that tastes like flavored vinegar. After 20-30 seconds, the patient spits out the solution and the Dr. or Hygienist use special glasses to see if any suspicious areas show up. If the do, the area is charted and a biopsy is scheduled with an oral surgeon.

One American dies every hour from oral cancer.  Twenty-five percent of oral cancers occur in people who don’t smoke and have no lifestyle risk factors. The risk factors are HPV, denture or partial denture wearers, smoking and all other forms of tobacco use. But remember, 25% of all oral cancer patients have NO RISK FACTORS. So it is a good idea to have it done at least one time to make sure there is no problem. If you are one with a risk factor, then this test should be done every other year. The cost is $65 and is not currently covered by insurance.

Oral Cancer is one of the most curable diseases when it’s caught early. If the area is not visible to the naked eye but is picked up by the visilite the cure rate is 90%, if seen by the visible eye and confirmed by the visilite, the cure rate is only 25%. So you can see that early detection is VERY important. You can ask our office staff to schedule your visilite exam by telephone or when you come into the office.
